Thanks to some visual tomfoolery the food at Verveine is magical in more ways than one, says an enchanted Zoe Williams of The Sunday Telegraph...................

We went to Verveine Fishmarket Restaurant in June 2010 and I have to say it was truly fantastic! The choice of fish was amazing and the fact that the fishmonger was at the front of the restaurant servicing fish to the public during the day and guests in the evening ensured that everything was fresh, fresh fresh.
There was a good selection of wine and produce sourced locally which is nice to see. Great value for money with no additional annoying charges........
Residents of Milford on Sea will know that Verveine was originally Monks, the well reputed and long established fishmongers. Stacey and Jon Crouch and David Wykes have reinvented and modernised this traditional old business and have added to it by creating a charming little restaurant behind the fish shop.
We visited Verveine, interestingly French for verbena and meaning lemon thyme, a couple of weeks after its grand opening. Upon entering the shop do stop and take in the wonderful display and variety of fish on offer, you know from the smell it is mouth wateringly fresh! ........
............Well worth a visit is a new restaurant which has just opened in the village, called Verveine, a longstanding fishmongers, now with dining tables and an open kitchen at the back.
Joint Proprietors Stacey Crouch & chef David Wykes have worked up an interesting menu, with four garnishes – umbria, provence, land & sea and grill – to accompany a large selection of fresh fish on the blackboard and sashimi-style starters and bouillabaisse in among more regular choices.
Our new local fine dining fish restaurant has now opened to rave reviews in Milford on Sea. Already people who have dined there are saying it is even better than Pebble Beach at Barton on Sea, & that is quite an accolade. Now of course you should not take my word for it, particularly as Stacey & David are friends of mine. Having visited the build on numerous occasions the transformation is extraordinary, Stacey’s eye for design is very impressive. ........
Verveine Fishmarket Restaurant is a new addition to the seaside village of Milford on Sea, though there has been a fishmonger onsite for the last 50 years. Having a restaurant that is also a fish shop makes perfect sense: it means the restaurant always has delicious fresh fish and it gives the shop a better chance of survival in an age when our fishmongers are fast disappearing.
The interior is comfortably modern with some quirky touches. Somebody here has a real eye for design (look out for the fabulous wallpaper in the ladies loo!) and even on a really drizzly day, the big sky-light made the restaurant feel bright and cheerful.
Looking at our fellow diners, it is clear everyone feels well looked after – because they are. With around 30 covers, you are likely to be served by one of the proud ..........
My wife and I went to this new restaurant on the first Saturday after it opened. The first impression as you walk in is that it is deceptively more spacious than from outside. The lighting and decor makes the restaurant feel both airy and comfortable. I particularly liked the hand-painted fish on the wall, this being one of many touches that gives it a feeling of class and style.
We were warmly welcomed, the menu is clear with the list of ‘todays’ fish on a board brought to the table. The complementary bread is an absolute deliight and wine list is reasonably priced.......
How many of you I wonder have a great relationship with your parents but somehow still have this sense that you’re not quite good enough and could do better? Eventually, if you’re like me, that changes from a consuming frustration into a resigned amusement and a few tricks to protect you from disappointment. One of my favourites is when you are asked for your advice or to make a recommendation, which in a similar fashion to the Christmas present you laboured over, is subsequently met with a polite but underwhelmed half-smile and that ‘has he got the receipt’ look or perhaps even a damning critique in the case of a restaurant ...........
Verveine, known and loved for years as “Monk’s”, is now run by hugely talented chef David Wykes who went into partnership to take over the popular fish shop and convert the rear of the property into a specialist fish restaurant, now tastefully and creatively decorated and cleverly lit. Eating at Verveine is fun, high‐quality dining which combines passion and theatre with culinary delights...........
David, who has trained in Michelin star restaurants throughout France and the UK takes modern concepts and combines them with classic combinations of flavours to create a clean and innovative taste using the finest ingredients. He put together an eclectic menu to satisfy the meat lovers as well as the fish enthusiasts...........
